AN INTERVIEW
Don't get excited, I didn't interview him. =( I found this interview
from SuperTeen amongst a pile of "stuff to save" in my room. For
once, I didn't mind being a packrat! Anyway, here it is!
Basic stats, please, David.
I'm 5'7", I have blond hair, my birthday is January 7 and I was born in
Council Bluffs, Iowa.
How was it making the Power Rangers movie?
The movie's going to be very good. As actors it was a really good experience
for all of us. [Filming a movie] is a little bit more intense in some
ways. It makes you focus a lot more and ground yourself a lot more.
How did you get the role of Billy, the Blue Ranger?
I looked in one of the trade magazines and they had an open casting call.
I went in with 3-4,000 other people, and eight callbacks later I got the
role.
Do you hang out a lot with the other Rangers?
In the beginning we used to, but as time goes on... we've all gotten our
own friends and are branching out. We work together so much....
But you all get along?
Of course. Actually, it's hard because you're with these people more than
you're with your family, so our relationships are like brothers and sisters.
We get in little fights, but it's all forgotten two minutes later.
Are you surprised by how popular the Power Rangers have become?
I never in a million years thought it would go to what it's gone to. I
don't think any of us expected the responsibility that would go along
with it.
Are you at all like your character, Billy?
Billy is intelligent, and sort of what people call a nerd at times. I
think in the beginning Billy and I were two different extremes, but now
I feel like Billy has influenced David's life and David has influenced
Billy's life.
Do you have any input on how Billy changes over time?
Yes, I do have a say in a lot of ways. I talk it over with the writers
and the producers. I still want Billy to be the intelligent one, but I
think sometimes they go a little overboard with it, because a lot of times
billy uses all these big words that no one can understand. [The Rangers]
are all supposed to be friends and I think Billy should be able to communicate
with his friends. And I've taken Billy from having glasses and greasy
hair- you'll see in the movie he doesn't have glasses any more.
What do you want fans to learn from watching Power Rangers?
That there's nothing wrong with being smart, there's nothing wrong with
being different. And to stay strong because life gets better- it will.
Do fans recognize you on the street?
Sometimes I forget that I'm on TV and I'll see people staring at me and
suddenly feel paranoid because I think I have something on my face or
my hair's sticking up or something like that. I keep forgetting that I'm
on Power Rangers. But it doesn't bother me- it's exciting. When I see
stars, I flip out too.
What do you like to do for fun?
I've really gotten into riding Wavejammers- they're like jet skis but
you sit on them instead of stand. I've also taken up mountain hiking,
and I write plays.
What kind of plays do you write?
Bizarre, twisted kinds of things. Harold pinter's my favorite playwright.
I'm actually working on turning all my plays into screenplays.
Do you have any pets at home?
No, but I'm probably gonna buy a house this year, 'cause I want to have
a yard and get a dog. If I did have a dog now I would feel bad because
I'm gone all day long and the dog would be left at home. So that's why
I've never had an animal yet.
What are some of your favorite things?
My favorite color is black. It always represents class and sophistication
to me. It's sleek. My favorite actor is Jack Nicholson and as far as females
go, I really like the actress Patricia Arquette.
What kind of roles do you want to do in the future?
I would love to do a nighttime soap, like a Melrose Place kind
of thing or even Northern Exposure.
Do you have a girlfriend?
Not right now. In the beginning I was really focused on my career, but
now I'm making it a point to slow down and, y'know, start enjoying people
more.
What do you look for in a girl?
I'm always attracted to someone who makes me laugh. If you can make me
laugh, that means you can get inside of me, or that I can trust you.
What do you like to do on a date?
Usually I pick them up and we go to a movie and to dinner. I've gone to
the beach a couple of times, I've gone hiking a couple of times. I do
all kinds of different things on my dates.
Do you like getting fan mail?
Yes. And I try to make a point of answering as much mail as possible.
Well, that's it. They go on to give the address at Saban where "you
can write to David Yost yourself," but I decided not to include that,
since this interview was from a while back. Lately, David has not
been answering fan mail, as far as I know, and rumours say he's distancing
himself from the show as much as he can. But who knows, maybe the guy
they interviewed is still out there somewhere... under all the hard feelings
and bitterness.... Anyway, back to reality. :P
